Description
The Accurascale ACC3160-DCC is an OO gauge DCC Sound Fitted model of Class 37/4 No. 37408 Loch Rannoch in EWS Maroon and Gold livery arguably the most popular Class 37/4 of the British Rail and early privatisation era.
No. 37408 clung obstinately to its large logo paint scheme the last so adorned until being called to Toton in mid-1998 for a repaint. Following a protracted overhaul which included a new toughened centre window, it debuted in EWS maroon and gold in November 1998, and wasn’t reunited with its famous Loch Rannoch nameplates until the following February. Over the next seven years the former No. 37289 (built as D6989) was a regular performer on loco-hauled services across the country, particularly on the Birmingham/Crewe to Bangor and Holyhead corridor, Cardiff to Fishguard, Leeds to Carlisle, and even on the Fort William sleeper. Its rock star status meant it regularly acquired various accoutrements including Eastfield Westies, silver buffers, white lamp irons and Immingham 40B shedplates. After running away and colliding with its stabled coaches at Rhymney on 1 August 2005 the locomotive was stored and eventually scrapped at EMR Kingsbury in January 2008.
Without doubt the most successful diesel design of the BR era, the English Electric Type 3 / Class 37 is a strong contender to be called the greatest locomotive in British railway history. 309 examples of this mixed-traffic 1,750hp Co-Co were built by English Electric and Robert Stephenson and Hawthorn between 1960 and 1965. Capable systemwide mixed-traffic performers, they led all types of freight and passenger services and 135 were rebuilt in the mid-1980s giving the class a further lease of life. Many remain at work today.
This DCC Sound Fitted version includes a factory-installed ESU LokSound V5 DCC chip with Accurascale’s customised dual-speaker technology a large Accurathrash bass speaker combined with a smaller high-frequency unit for rich, realistic sound reproduction. Operates on both DCC and analogue (DC) control straight from the box.
