Description
This is the Rapido GER Dia.48 preserved 5043 model. The Diagram 48 seven-plank open wagon grew directly out of the Diagram 17, developed in early 1903 while the last five-plank order was still under construction, to give greater capacity and better load retention for low-weight, high-volume goods. Within two months an existing 1898-built five-plank wagon had been converted into a working prototype, and although the oil axleboxes trialled to raise capacity to 12 tons proved unnecessary, the standard 10-ton production version entered service before the year was out. Construction continued until the summer of 1908, by which time some 1,300 had been built.
This example, No.5043, wears GER livery as currently preserved, one of the two prototype wagons Rapido surveyed for this range.
Full external, internal and underframe detail is captured on this Rapido model, with variations in brakes, door types, builder’s plate styles, buffers, axleboxes, safety loops and brake lever guards matched to the prototype. The wagon rolls on Great Eastern style 8-spoke wheels with their distinctive retaining rings, running in brass bearings, and NEM coupling pockets are fitted throughout, with a high-quality livery finish.
