Description

This is the Rapido Dia.17 LNER Loco wagon model. Designed to replace the ageing 8 and 9 ton timber-framed wagons of the 1870s and 1880s, the Great Eastern Railway’s Diagram 17 was a robust steel-framed 5-plank open wagon with a 9ft wheelbase, doors on both sides and an improved 10-ton capacity. Over 12,000 were built between 1893 and 1903, at one point accounting for 45 per cent of the GER’s entire goods fleet, and some were even constructed under licence for the Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast Railway as part of a deal securing the GER running rights over LDECR metals. When the LDECR was absorbed by the Great Central Railway in 1907, those wagons passed into GCR ownership and livery. The type survived through grouping into LNER stock and on into British Railways, with over 400 still at work, mostly as internal user or departmental vehicles, as late as 1948.

This example, No.0197, wears LNER Locomotive Department internal-user livery.

This Rapido model captures the wagon with full external, internal and underframe detail, including variations in brakes, door types, builder’s plate styles, buffers, axleboxes, safety loops and brake lever guards to match the prototype. Great Eastern style 8-spoke wheels with their distinctive retaining rings run in brass bearings, with NEM coupling pockets fitted for compatibility with modern couplings, and the livery is applied to a high standard throughout.
