Description

This is the Rapido Dia.17 LNER pre-36 606301 model. Designed to replace the ageing 8 and 9 ton timber-framed wagons of the 1870s and 1880s, the Great Eastern Railway’s Diagram 17 was a robust steel-framed 5-plank open wagon with a 9ft wheelbase, doors on both sides and an improved 10-ton capacity. Over 12,000 were built between 1893 and 1903, at one point accounting for 45 per cent of the GER’s entire goods fleet, and some were even constructed under licence for the Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast Railway as part of a deal securing the GER running rights over LDECR metals. When the LDECR was absorbed by the Great Central Railway in 1907, those wagons passed into GCR ownership and livery. The type survived through grouping into LNER stock and on into British Railways, with over 400 still at work, mostly as internal user or departmental vehicles, as late as 1948.

This example, No.606301, wears LNER livery, using the pre-1936 style of lettering and livery.

Full external, internal and underframe detail is captured on this Rapido model, with variations in brakes, door types, builder’s plate styles, buffers, axleboxes, safety loops and brake lever guards matched to the prototype. The wagon rolls on Great Eastern style 8-spoke wheels with their distinctive retaining rings, running in brass bearings, and NEM coupling pockets are fitted throughout, with a high-quality livery finish.
